Where are they now? The last Man Utd XI to score a goal vs. Liverpool at Anfield
Manchester United have not scored against bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield since December 2018.
They suffered a 3-1 loss, prompting manager Jose Mourinho to lose his position immediately. As Liverpool continued their winning streak, Manchester United have remained goal-less during five visits to Anfield since then.
We've searched through past records to see how the last team of eleven players who were able to score at Anfield are doing now.
GK: David de Gea
There's no disputing that De Gea was once considered the Premier League's top goalkeeper, but his recent decline in performance coincided with Manchester United's continued struggles following Mourinho's departure.
The international player left the club in 2023 and remained without a contract for one year before joining Italian Serie A team Fiorentina in the latest transfer window.
" He is currently experiencing a resurgence with the rapidly improving Serie A team and has likely saved more penalties in Italy this season than he did in his entire 12-year period at Old Trafford.
RB: Matteo Darmian
Darmian only had a minor role during his four years at Old Trafford, transferring to Italy in 2019 for a £1.4 million deal with Parma.
The former full-back has since joined Inter Milan and has collected seven trophies in Italy. Darmian almost achieved the Champions League title in 2023, but Inter fell short in the final to Manchester City.
CB: Chris Smalling
Smalling left Manchester United in 2019 to move to Roma, but afterwards, he appreciated the remainder of his career after rebooting it in the Italian capital city.
He won the inaugural UEFA Conference League in 2022, and took second place in the Europa League the following year.
The former England international made another transfer during the last summer, joining Saudi Pro League club Al-Fayha and making a poorer debut than any British defender since Jonathan Woodgate.
CB: Victor Lindelof
The first of three starters from 2018 who remains with United to this day. Victor Lindelof has experienced ups and downs in playing time under various managers, but he now finds himself further down the depth chart under Ruben Amorim.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand did not take kindly to a (emojis added) dig from former manager José Mourinho, who made a comment about Ferdinand's successor after leaving Het tre led to a heated exchange, making headlines in 2019
Mourinho stated, 'Lindelof is very, very skilled in certain areas of the game.' However, he noted that Lindelof can be overwhelmed in one-on-one situations within the penalty area and is not particularly effective in aerial challenges. Mourinho highlighted that Maguire's physical presence and stature are significant advantages.
The Swedish international's contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024-2025 season, and it would be a surprise if he remained at Old Trafford through that point.
LB: Ashley Young
Veteran player Young returned to the US four years ago at just 35, and is still actively playing at the age of 39.
He won a Scudetto with Inter, spent two years back at Aston Villa, and is now providing valuable experience for Sean Dyche's Everton, which is fighting for survival.
CM: Ander Herrera
He gained immense popularity among United fans during his five-year tenure but chose to end his time with the club when his contract expired in 2019.
The midfielder then joined PSG on a free transfer, crowned Ligue 1 champion and appearing in the Champions League final in his debut season. He's now returned to his childhood club Athletic Bilbao.
The player who took his place at Anfield six years ago made a vibrant impression at Manchester United, scoring an astonishing goal on his debut against Liverpool.
But Martial infuriated the Manchester United faithful with his inconsistent performances and attitude that stank like a teenager's bedroom. He left Manchester United at the end of his deal in 2024 and signed for AEK Athens in Greece.
CM: Nemanja Matic
One of Jose Mourinho's loyal protégés, Matic remained at United in the summer of 2022 before rejoining his former manager at Roma.
Matic played only one season in Italy before transferring to Lyon, where he remains a key member of the first team at the age of 36.
RW: Diogo Dalot (Marouanne Fellaini '45)
They signed Dalot in 2018 for approximately $24 million. However, he did not meet expectations initially. It's possible that playing on the wing, where he played at Anfield, contributed to his underwhelming early performances.
Even now, just when you might think a full-back is consistently performing impressively at the top level and has clearly taken their game to the next level, Diogo Dalot will come along and remind you that he hasn't entirely escaped his past errors with some of his disconcerting defensive lapses or an eyebrow-raising miss, such as the one at West Ham in Erik ten Hag's last game.
Despite this, Real Madrid is still being speculated about signing him.
Although he is often criticized at Old Trafford, Fellaini was a consistent member of the team under both Louis van Gaal and Mourinho.
However, he was soon deemed unnecessary by coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and permanently transferred to the Chinese Super League's Shandong Luneng in January 2019.
He lingered in China until his official retirement in 2024.
CAM: Jesse Lingard (Dribbling skills inspired by Juan Mata)
Marcus Rashford's England teammate, Jesse Lingard's, goalscorer at Anfield, left at the end of his contract in June 2022. He then spent an unsuccessful year at Nottingham Forest, having had a notable decline in his career after a memorable loan spell at West Ham. Unfortunately, offers from European clubs were not forthcoming.
The player relocated to a team on the other side of the world – FC Seoul in South Korea. A month later, in March 2024, J-Lingz faced criticism from his manager, Kim Gi-dong, who publicly suggested that the player was not putting in sufficient effort and did not demonstrate adequate physicality.
He is once again active in competitive football and has scored six goals in the South Korean professional football league.
Mata became a significantly less regular member of the United squad and left the club for Galatasaray in 2022.
Since moving on from United, the Spaniard has experienced difficulty settling in one location for an extended period, having had stints in Turkey, Japan, and most recently Australia.
He is currently one of the most well-known players competing for Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League.
LW: Marcus Rashford
Rashford has developed into one of the most senior and essential players in the team – but is now on the brink of leaving Manchester United.
With 138 goals in 426 appearances for his hometown club, Rashford has been one of Manchester United's defining players of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
However, the forward's inconsistent performances coupled with his very high salary has made him a potential casualty of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's plans to streamline the team, and even Rashford himself has said that he's open to a new opportunity.
It's a disappointing conclusion to his stint at Old Trafford, and many United supporters would likely want to see Rashford revitalise his career elsewhere.
ST: Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku has achieved goal-scoring success in every team he has played for. Although he was not as prolific a goal-scorer when playing at Old Trafford, Lukaku still made 42 goals in 96 appearances for Manchester United, which is no small achievement.
It appears that Lukaku seems to be in his happiest state while in Italy, especially when managed by his former coaches.
He has signed with Napoli to be with Conte again, just as he also joined Roma to work with Mourinho. He has often been seen to be back to his old self as he was when they were together at Inter.
